ALAMOSA – It was another typical match between Alamosa and Centauri as the fourth-ranked Lady Mean Moose defeated the Lady Falcons in three straight sets Tuesday at the AHS gym. The scores were 25-20, 25-17 and 25-17.

Even though Alamosa swept the match, it was not at all an easy one as all three sets were close.

“We’re keeping the same goal of not losing a set in league and the girls are doing it,” said Alamosa coach Annie Mortensen. “Centauri played hard. They played good defense and were scrappy. We’re just trying to stay on top. We want to play hard and be as consistent as can be.”

“Never count Centauri volleyball out of anything,” said Centauri coach Ali Miller.

The Lady Mean Moose took a 4-2 lead to open the first set, but the Lady Vikings tied the score at 4-4. Alamosa regained the lead at 7-4, but Centauri came back to reduce the margin to 8-7.

The teams then traded side outs before the Lady Falcons deadlocked the score at 11-11.

The Lady Mean Moose then scored six consecutive points for a 17-11 lead. The Lady Falcons narrowed the margin to 18-14, before Alamosa went on a 6-3 run to increase its advantage to 24-17.

Centauri mounted a comeback effort as it closed to within 24-20. But Alamosa put the set away on a kill by Jaelin Garcia by a score of 25-20.

The Lady Falcons opened the second set with a 4-1 lead. The teams then exchanged side outs before Centauri pushed the lead to 8-4.

Alamosa went on a 7-2 run to take its first lead of the set at 11-10. Centauri tied the score at 12-12, but the Lady Mean Moose went on a 3-1 run for a 15-13 lead.

The Lady Falcons had a 5-2 rally to regain the lead at 17-16. But that would be the final time they would lead in the set as Alamosa scored the final nine points and won 25-17.

Centauri took a 1-0 lead to begin the third set, but the Lady Mean Moose went on an 11-3 run to take an 11-4 advantage. The Lady Falcons closed to within 11-7, but Alamosa scored five unanswered points for a 16-7 lead.

Centauri narrowed its deficit to 16-11, but Alamosa went on a 7-3 run to increase the lead to 23-14. The Lady Falcons came to within 23-16, but the Lady Mean Moose scored two of the final three points for a 25-17 win.

Leading the Alamosa offense was Morgan Ortega with 28 assists. Aubrey Rothermich led in kills with 12, followed by Garcia with 11 and Taybor Wiedeman with eight. Ortega and Addison Rice led in service aces with three apiece, followed by Rothermich with two.

Aubree Ullery led Centauri with 19 assists. Mikasa Gilleland led in kills with seven, followed by Joselyn McCarroll with five. Ullery also led in aces with four, followed by Joselyn McCarroll and Paige Sowards both with two.

Alamosa (13-2, 6-0) will go over Wolf Creek Pass this weekend to wrap up Intermountain League play. It will play at Bayfield on Friday and at Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday. The Lady Mean Moose will look to wrap up the league title.

“We’re just going to try to play hard and control what we can and beat them both,” Mortensen said.

Centauri (6-10, 2-3) will also go over the pass this weekend to face Montezuma-Cortez on Friday and Bayfield on Saturday.

“We’re excited for this weekend,” Miller said. “We’re going to put some work in at practice and we’re going to head over there.”
