Creede hosted a Raft Race on the Rio Grande from 1965 until sometime in the late 1990s. In 1965, the race started just below Creede and ended on the other side of South Fork. But for most of the years the ending was at Collier Park. Participants came from all over the Valley, Colorado, other states and occasionally from foreign countries. The start in this 1965 photograph was at “Phipps Bridge.” Many local Creede boys won races throughout the years. Alton Cole, photographer and collector; Shane Birdsey Family, donors.
