Labor Day weekend in Creede was as hot as promised

CREEDE — With the sun shining on the San Juan Mountains, participants in the annual Mountain Run in set off on their adventures for the day with a small crowd of spectators cheering them on. The race was well attended and by 11 a.m. the 12-mile contestants started to trickle back to town, greeted by Nancy Leggett as she called out their numbers and times.

While runners from the race were making their way back to town, this year's Salsa Fiesta participants were busy on Main Street setting up for people as they wandered along the many shops and restaurants eager to greet them and help them while they celebrated the last days of summer.

Families wandered through the Creede Farmer’s Market listening to tunes from a few different bands as they played throughout the day. Salsa Fiesta ticket holders walked from each station tasting spicy concoctions that varied from red, green, fruity, and free style, marking down their favorites well into the afternoon when the winners were announced.

Tommyknocker Tavern came in first in the Red Category, The Creede Hotel swept in and snatched first for the Green Category, Rincon Reality came in first in the Fruit Category and The Blue Yak took first in the Free Style Category as well as taking the Best Over All for the weekend.

On top of the celebrations happening downtown, the Creede Repertory Theatre also closed out two of its shows for the season — “The Royale” and “Cinderella.”

The weekend ended with music in the park and a gathering of friends, neighbors and family as they bid goodbye to warm summer days and welcomed fall with open arms.

Now with fall on the horizon the town is preparing for the bi-annual Silver Thread Quilt Guild Quilt Show and the annual Cruisin’ the Canyon car show which will take place the third weekend in September.
