Town board discusses myriad of issues

CREEDE- During the end of the month meeting of the Creede Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Aug. 15, the night began with a report by Public Works Director Ben Davis, who recapped the work he and his crew have been doing over the past month. Davis reported that the department has been very busy keeping up with the rain in the past few weeks, working to unclog sewer systems throughout town and help with any drainage issues that residents and guests may be experiencing. Davis also stated that they were working to keep up with the grass in public areas around town, which due to the increase of rain has been difficult.
Davis continued by stating that a couple of community service individuals were interested in helping and that he had some projects in mind to keep them busy. “We have been very busy keeping up with public facilities and the gym, but that is a good thing. Everything is running smoothly and we are just moving from one thing to the next,” said Davis.
A member of the crowd commented on the great job the department was doing in keeping up with the town and that the new crosswalk paint was working out very well. Davis thanked the member of the public for the comment and stated that he hopes to have more crosswalks painted near the Kentucky Belle Market and further up Main Street near the theatre once the busy season begins to die down.
When material for the first crosswalk was purchased, the cost estimate included future crosswalk sites, and the leftover material will be used to finish more as the year comes to a close. Davis explained that the new material that is used stands out better to motorists, cautioning them of pedestrians and that it will last a lot longer than the old material.
Another suggestion from the public was to see if the city could have the public trashcans picked up more often after a busy weekend. Someone mentioned that the cans are usually overflowing by Sunday and it would be nice to see if the local trash company could pick up twice a week, rather than just once. Board member Frank Freer pointed out that the trash service provided by MDS is a courtesy service, but that it is possible to look into renegotiating the agreement.
Board members agreed that the town seems to be getting busier than from previous years, so they should bring the issue back to MDS owner John Graham for negotiation, while keeping in mind that he is currently providing the service pro bono. The topic was closed for the time being and board members thanked Davis for his continued work.
