South Fork youth wins MLK ski race at Wolf Creek

WOLF CREEK SKI AREA — Del Norte Tiger and South Fork resident Corbin Horrocks had the fastest time of the day on the race course at Wolf Creek Ski Area on Jan. 20. Drawn by blazing sunshine and great snow conditions, 77 racers signed up for the MLK Weekend Fun Race. Challengers ranged from three-years-old to 71-plus.
Competing in the boys 9–11 age bracket, Corbin finished his first run in 31.57, the fastest of the day in all age groups. Racers in the top three spots for each bracket received medals during the traditional awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m.
The Fun Series races are open to all ages and ability levels and is included for free with the purchase of a lift ticket. Register at the Raven’s Nest between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. First race takes off at 11 a.m. on Charisma. The course remains open through 1 p.m. to allow racers to record two attempts.
The Super Bowl Fun Race on Sunday, Feb. 3 is the next Fun Race in the series at Wolf Creek, but the next race on the mountain is the Wolf Creek Challenge Series opener on Saturday, Jan. 26. The Challenge Series begins with a Giant Slalom race down Middle and Lower Charisma. Skiers and snowboarders will navigate more than 40 gates. Open to teams and individuals, the event directs all proceeds to the Wolf Creek Ski Team. The entry fee will be $15 with a $27 lift ticket for racers 18 years old and under. For everyone else over 18, the entry fee will be $25 with a $50 lift ticket.
The Fun Race on Sunday, Jan. 27 has been cancelled.
