Silver Threads Quilt Guild donates to South Fork Fire Rescue

South Fork firefighter Lucas Slade, Fire Chief Tyler Off, Silver Threads Quilt Guild member Dawn Reitz and Tony Perrone pose with a donation check for $650 that will go towards purchasing a defibrillator for the department.

SOUTH FORK— Through funding collected from the 2018 Silver Threads Quilt Show held in Creede, the guild was able to donate to the South Fork Fire Rescue and several other non-profit organizations in Rio Grande, Mineral and Hinsdale counties.
According to guild president and founding member Vi Koch, the guild donated $650 to the department to help with purchasing a defibrillator. According to Fire Chief Tyler Off this donation will help considerably towards this purchase.
The show is a bi-annual event that has been bringing quilting enthusiasts to the Creede area for many years and has helped with donations collected every year the show is held. This year, the show implemented new activities for guests as they wandered through a maze of colorful quilts, including a scavenger hunt for the younger crowd. “We were very pleased with the outcome this year and how the new activities were enjoyed by all,” said Koch.
The South Fork Fire Rescue is one step closer to purchasing the defibrillator that will be a huge benefit for the community they serve. Earlier this year, the department received another donation from the Greater South Fork Community Foundation that will be used for the same purpose.
Though the department still needs to collect some additional funding to pay for the expensive device, they are thankful for the donations they have received up to this point and hope to be able to purchase the defibrillator by next year.
The guild was announced the winner of the raffle quilt made by Anne Strong who completed the embroidery, Beth Kindall who created the Uncompahgre Mountain scene, Janice Torres who created the water scene and Marcie Vitopil who created and designed the Aspen scene. Penny Snyder, Sheralyn Humble, Vi Koch and Diane Singer helped to create the rest of the quilt and apply the finishing touches.
The quilt was won by Brian Lamorboux from Scottsdale, Ariz. Lamorboux’s grandmother collects quilts and has stated that he loves quilts just as much as she does. The quilt was titled, “Along the Silver Thread” and depicted several scenes of the drive along Highway 149 heading towards Lake City from Creede.
