Senior lunch program receives donations

CREEDE—Seventy-one bags full of food and checks and cash totaling over $5,000 were added to the Senior Lunch Program and Food Pantry last week thanks to Mountain View RV Park and Resort and Alpine Ministry.
Summer residents at the RV park have been known for their generosity to the community they love by making donations to several of the area’s organizations such as the school and public health. This summer, they turned their efforts and appreciation towards the program that helped provide lunches for many of their residents.
The Senior Lunch Program has been in the works for nearly two years now and has been providing much-needed meals to the elder community in Creede and Mineral County for 18 months. The county took over the program shortly after an announcement made by the Creede School that they would no longer be able to run the program in 2015 and have since made it into a five-day a week program at the old gym and even visit homes around the county to deliver hot meals to those in need.
The program has a daily attendance of about 15 people, which is facilitated through several donations, volunteers and grants that helped get the program off the ground. Silver Thread Public Health District Director Tara Hardy has been working regularly with the Mineral County Health Council to send out donation requests to aid with program costs receiving amazing results.
Hardy was pleased to make an announcement last week when the Mountain View donations came through the door. “We want to thank the wonderful folks with Alpine Ministry at Mountain Views RV Park not only for their recent generous donations of $4,000 to the Senior Lunch Program and $1,400 to the Food Pantry, but also for the 71+ bags of food items they collected over the summer. We are truly grateful for the support we receive! Safe travels and a mild winter to all of you! We look forward to having you back in Creede next summer!”
“They have been so generous to us and Mineral County, and we cannot express our gratitude enough for what they have done,” said Silver Thread Public Health District Office Manager Stephanie Smith-Hester.
The lunch program runs year-round and is available to any seniors in the area that are in need of a hot meal. For more information, contact the public health office in Creede at 658-2416.
