CREEDE— On Saturday, July 27 a report came into the Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office about a body in the Rio Grande just north of Monte Vista. According to reports, officers responded to the call and recovered an unidentified male from the river. The body was transferred to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office for identification.
On Monday, July 29, Mineral County Emergency Manager Terry Wetherill confirmed that the body was positively identified as missing Creede resident Zack Jones. In a statement made by Wetherill he said that they had been notified by Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office of the location of the body. “We didn’t want to make a statement until we were absolutely sure. We wanted to coordinate with the family first and foremost,” said Wetherill.
Mineral County Sheriff’s Department commented, “It is with heavy hearts that we report that the body was positively identified as Zack Jones, a Creede resident whose raft overturned during a float on the Rio Grande River on June 27. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Zack during this difficult time.”
Exactly one month from the time Jones fell into the river after his raft over-turned, his family can now hopefully finally find some peace.
Several hours of volunteer time and search efforts went into the recovery of Jones, who was loved by many in the Creede community.
