Local restaurant offering a free lunch to those in need

SOUTH FORK- Several restaurants throughout the San Luis Valley have gone above and beyond to help families with food during this time of uncertainty and one local chef in South Fork is starting to offer free lunches to anyone who may need a meal. According to the Friends of South Fork, “John Trella, owner and chef at the Rockaway Café in South Fork is offering free lunch to anyone in need of a meal.”

Trella has been the owner of the Rockaway Cafe for many years and has seen the town change from almost the very beginning.

Friends of South Fork member Kris Steffens stated, “The free lunches started Monday, April 6, and will be served from 11:30 to 12:30, Monday thru Friday. Out of a desire to help the community, lunch will be available for takeout at the front window of the restaurant. John asks that you pick up only 2 meals maximum, per person, so there’s enough for everyone. He also requests that you mind the social distancing guidelines when picking up your lunch. There will be meals like pasta, meatloaf and other great meals over the next two weeks. They will be in takeout containers with a fork. There’s not much parking space at the Rockaway, so please be mindful not to block the road. The lunch is for anyone, truckers, passersby, residents and everyone in between.

If anyone out there would be willing to volunteer to help John by handing the meals out the front window, it would only need to be one helper each day for one hour. If you can help, please call (719) 873-5581with your information,”

Thank you, John Trella for your generous gift to South Fork! So many good people are making sacrifices to help each other during this difficult time. Thanks to all!
