ARCHULETA/MINERAL COUNTIES — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor A & S Construction began a project on Monday, April 30, to resurface a 14.3-mile stretch of US Highway (US) 160 from Pagosa Springs, at the Colorado Highway (CO) 84 junction, mile point (MP) 144.29, to east of the Treasure Falls turnout, MP 158.56. The roadway will receive a 2.5-inch surface treatment (including a 1-inch leveling course of asphalt mix to address imperfections, followed by a 1.5-inch overlay of new asphalt). During the project, scheduled for completion by early September 2018, crews will also be:

Upgrading guardrails
Making improvements to three bridges (including new bridge rail, resurfacing, waterproofing and one expansion joint repair)
Patching and/or milling and resurfacing damaged sections of roadway
Widening truck chain station areas
Making embankment, culvert and ditch improvements
This highway resurfacing and safety-improvement project was contracted to A & S Construction for $7.5 million.

Travel impacts
Work hours during the entire four-month project on US 160 will take place Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. During the first two weeks of the project, motorists will encounter single-lane, alternating travel through three short work zones (two of the bridges, at MP 153.9 and MP 149, and the chain station at MP 157). Starting in mid-May, the lane closures will be longer and, at times, there will be 15-minute full traffic holds through the work zone. Please note, during full traffic holds, actual travel delays will likely exceed 15 minutes as traffic queues are cleared in each direction and as summer traffic volumes increase. Work zones are expected to be 1.5-miles long to accommodate resurfacing work.  
A temporary width restriction will be in place 24/7 from May 14 to July 27 (this restriction may be lifted sooner). The restriction, in place between MP 149 and 158.5, will be 12 feet wide initially, and will decrease to 11 feet wide, likely in June. Those with wide loads should contact CDOT’s Permits Office at 800-350-3765 for updates and detailed information.
The speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph through the work zone for everyone’s safety. Please avoid distractions as you travel through the work zone and go “Slow for the Cone Zone!”
