Dinner draws town together

The Creede community came together Saturday night for the annual Thanksgiving dinner.

CREEDE— Providing warmth and community service to Creede since 1899, the Ladies Aid hosted their annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Creede Community Center on Nov. 17. Ladies Aid members prepared San Luis Valley mashed potatoes, and Tommyknocker Tavern staff cooked a variety of meats donated by Kentucky Belle Market and Tomkins Hardware and Lumber. Local youngsters helped present the food, including a dessert table as long as the main entree spread.
Ladies Aid organizer Wendy Leggitt said they plan for about 200 place-settings every year. The sheriff’s department also delivered more than 30 meals to neighbors who couldn’t make it to the celebration.
“This is a great way to bring the community together,” noted fourth-generation Creede connection Patrick Dooley. “Looks like the whole town is here.”
Once everyone was seated, separate tables took turns wedding-reception style. They snaked through lines for meat, potatoes, dressing and typical Thanksgiving fare. Veteran guests strategically snagged desserts first, and there was plenty for seconds for everyone.
Also unveiled, a plaque honoring Creede residents who have supported the Community Center over the years will be on display for future visitors.
